In 1610, the beginning of the Edo Period, Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康) the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan ordered the various daimyo to help with the building of a new castle at Nagoya for one of the three Tokugawa family branches, the Owari. Consequently, Nagoya Castle was the center of one of the most important castle towns in Japan.

Although the castle was almost completely destroyed in the air raids of 1945, the castle was rebuilt as the current ferro-concrete reconstruction dates from 1959.
