Todaiji is located in Nara Park, in central Nara, and it is one of the most famous and historically significant temples in Japan as well as a symbol of Nara. It was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples(Kokubunji) of Japan. Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall) is 57 meters long and 50 meters wide and is the largest wooden building in the world. It is the house of the world's largest statue of the Buddha Vairocana known in Japanese simply as Nara no Daibutsu (奈良の大仏).
